Choosing a colour online is easier when you describe what you like about it. “Brown” might mean a deep, quiet overall shade, a darker root with lighter lengths or a highlighted style with brighter pieces around the face. Those are different visual decisions. A useful colour brief breaks the look into parts and helps you ask better questions when the photographs leave something uncertain. The goal is a considered choice, not a promise that every screen will show a shade identically.

Separate the base from the accents

Start by identifying the overall base colour, then look at the root, the middle lengths and the ends. Note whether the colour appears fairly uniform or changes along the hair. For highlighted styles, look at the width and placement of the lighter sections. A few bright front pieces can create a different effect from fine highlights distributed throughout.

Write your preference in ordinary language. “A dark root with a softer brown through the ends” is more informative than “something natural”. If you like a particular photograph, point to the feature you want to match. That keeps the conversation focused even when colour names vary between styles.

Look through all available images of the selected colour, preferably on the same screen and with the same display settings. Notice changes between bright light, indoor scenes and close-ups. A variation across photographs does not automatically mean a different colour; it is a reason to examine the labels and ask which images represent the option you selected.

Avoid relying on a screenshot that has been filtered, reposted or heavily compressed. Return to the product’s own gallery and named options. If a video is available, use it as another view, while remembering that lighting still affects the appearance. A moving image does not remove every uncertainty about colour.

Decide how close a match needs to be

For a full wig, you may be choosing a complete new look. For a half wig or extensions, you may want the added hair to sit alongside your own. Those situations deserve different levels of colour comparison. A deliberate contrast can be a style choice, while an unnoticed mismatch may make blending harder than you expected.

If you need a close match, compare your own mid-lengths and ends as well as the root, using a clear photograph without a colour filter. Ask about any matching support available for that particular product. Do not assume the store can provide a physical swatch unless that service is explicitly offered.

Bring your wardrobe into the decision

Think about the clothes and makeup you already enjoy wearing. You can test a proposed colour direction by placing reference images beside a few favourite outfits. This is a preference exercise, not a rule about which shades a person is allowed to wear. Notice whether you want the hair to blend quietly into the look or become its main feature.

If you are trying a new direction, change one major element at a time. Keeping a familiar cut while exploring a different colour can make the decision easier to judge. If both the colour and silhouette are new, write down what attracts you to each so the choice stays intentional.

Confirm the selected option before ordering

The colour shown first in a gallery may not be the colour currently chosen in the options. Check the named variant, selected length and any associated price before adding it to your bag. Review the same information in the bag, especially when buying several colours of a similar style.

Do not plan on correcting an uncertain colour with home dye or bleach. Whether a piece can be chemically altered depends on its material and processing, and the outcome is not established by the words “human hair” alone. Clarify the specification before purchase and consult a suitably experienced stylist if custom colouring is part of your plan.

A colour brief you can keep

Save the product link, exact colour name, preferred root effect and highlight placement, plus one sentence about your desired result. Add any unanswered question before making the final choice. This record is useful for repeat orders too: a memorable photograph is less precise than the actual variant. Explore the hair edit with your brief, then use our length and shape guide to complete the comparison.

Keep exploring. Your next chapter is yours to shape.
